Books
Trident Technical College’s Learning Resources Center (LRC) has over 90,000 volumes covering all curriculum subject areas. Books (and other resources) can be located at one of three Trident campuses (Main, Palmer, and Berkeley), or in TTC's Online library available via the Internet. Several titles on the list are also available through the TTC’s electronic library, netLibrary. The entire book can then be read online. Additional titles of interest in the area of education, teacher development, early childhood development, etc. can be located using different subject/keywords in both the online catalog and netLibrary. In addition, the LRC is a member of the Charleston Area Library Consortium (CALC). Through this membership and interlibrary loan, additional materials from area libraries are also available. Use the LRC’s online library catalog to search Trident’s collection and the collections of other area libraries.
Online Sources
The following online databases are available through the Trident Technical College Learning Resources Center and will be most helpful in SOC 101. Additional databases are found on the LRC web page (http://www.tridenttech.edu/library.htm). Databases can be accessed on and off campus. Access off-campus requires a current Library ID number (13 digit bar code number found on your Trident ID card).
INFOTRAC
- Select the Database best suitable for your search. Most Infotrac Databases work the same. For journal articles in Sociology suggested databases are Expanded Academic ASAP, Health Reference Center and Health and Wellness.
SUBJECT GUIDE SEARCH
· Use Subject Guide Search for broad topics (ex: 1 or 2 word searches). You will be able to narrow down the results within indexed categories.
KEYWORD SEARCH
· Use Keyword Search to specify words you want the resulting articles to obtain. Select one of the buttons to search for keywords either in title, citation, abstract or in entire article content.
LIMITING THE SEARCH (OPTIONAL)
Full Text - Check the box if you only want to retrieve articles that contain the entire full text
(Remember, articles that aren’t full text may be available in hard copy at Trident or one of the surrounding libraries in the Charleston Area i.e. C of C., CSU, Citadel, MUSC, Chas. County Public Library. If at another library, the article can be obtained through our Interlibrary Loan Agreement.)
By Date – If needed, specify a date or date range. (ex: 1999-2002, since 9/11/2001, 2/1/2002 on)
By Journal – Specify a specific journal and Infotrac will only search that periodical. You can select up to 10 journals to be searched at one time by using the browse key, selecting the journals, and clicking the submit selections button. There are several scholarly journals available dealing with issues in Sociology. Remember, magazines like: Time, Newsweek, etc. are not scholarly journals.
Refereed publications - Refereed journals are those in which articles, before they are published, must be reviewed by a body of peers, experts in the same field as the writer.
The resulting list of citations will appear. Under each citation you will see one of the following: Text, Text with graphics, Abstract, and Citation. This tells you how much of the article is immediately available within the database.
You will have the option of printing the article or emailing it to yourself for later use.
For additional Help and other features (i.e. advanced searching), click “Help” on the menu located in the left side margin. Follow the link to the “Help Index.”

Full-text articles and Internet Websites are provided. Also provides daily news articles, maps of the world, historic documents, suggested hot topics, and much more.
- You will have the option of printing the article or emailing it to yourself for later use.
The following Sociology journals are found in Infotrac and others of the LRC’s databases:
American Journal of Sociology
American Sociological Review
Annual Review of Sociology
Contemporary Sociology
Journal of Black Studies
Journal of Sociology
Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Social Education
Social Justice
Social Science Journal
Internet Websites
When selecting a web site to use as a source look carefully over it to determine if it is a good one to use. Some things to look for: the authority or who created the web site and their credentials, a date it was created or updated, and a point of contact for the maker of the web site (email, address, etc). There are many domains, but some of the more common one are: edu – education, org – organization, com – commercial or company and gov – government. We suggest that you try to use sites with domains of .edu, .org, and .gov.
