ENG 101 - English Composition I

The following resources are available in Trident Technical College’s Library System to assist in the course ENG 101.

Books

Trident Technical College’s Learning Resources Center (LRC) has over 90,000 volumes covering all curriculum subject areas. Books (and other resources) can be located at one of three Trident campuses (Main, Palmer, and Berkeley) or in TTC's Online library available via the Internet.  Several titles on the list are also available through the TTC’s electronic library, netLibrary.  The entire book can then be read online.  Additional titles of interest in the area of education, teacher development, early childhood development, etc. can be located using different subject/keywords in both the online catalog and netLibrary. In addition, the LRC is a member of the CharlestonArea Library Consortium (CALC).  Through this membership and interlibrary loan, additional materials from area libraries are also available. Use the LRC’s online library catalog to search Trident’s collection and the collections of other area libraries.

Books in TTC and surrounding academic libraries are classified using the Library of Congress Classification System. (high schools and the public library use the Dewey Classification System).  The Library of Congress system classifies by subject, always begins with alphabets and usually gives the 4-digit year of publication as the last part of the Call number.  Example:  HV4708 .T39 1999

Online Sources

The following online databases are available through the Trident Technical College Learning Resources Center and will be most helpful in ENG 101. Additional databases are found on the LRC web page (http://www.tridenttech.edu/library.htm).  Databases can be accessed on and off campus.  Access off-campus requires a current Library ID number (13 digit bar code number found on your Trident ID card).

InfoTrac  - Includes several databases full of magazine and journal articles, newspaper articles, pamphlets, book reviews, newswires, maps, charts, graphics, etc. Suggested Databases include: Expanded Academic ASAP, Business and Company ASAP, General Reference Center, Biography Resource Center, and Health Reference Center Academic, Custom Newspapers (NY Times, Greenville News, Post Courier). Updated daily.

SIRS - an online database updated daily SIRS provides valuable information on social issues, economics, business, politics, global issues, scientific developments, health, history, government, culture, the arts and humanities. FULL-TEXT articles and Internet Websites are provided.  Also provides daily news articles, maps of the world, historic documents, suggested hot topics, and much more.

EBSCO - A collection of online databases covering all academic topics.  Includes ERIC, the Educational Resource Information Center, Religion and Philosophy collection, Military and Government collection, and more.   Academic Search Premier searches all of the collections at one time.  FULL-TEXT articles are provided.

Internet Websites

When selecting a web site to use as a source look carefully over it to determine if it is a good one to use.  Some things to look for:  the authority or who created the web site and their credentials, a date it was created or updated, and a point of contact for the maker of the web site (email, address, etc).  There are many domains, but some of the more common one are:  edu – education, org – organization, com – commercial or company and gov – government.  We suggest that you try to use sites with domains of .edu, .org, and .gov.

To cut down on so many search engine “hits” or "results", try to narrow your subject down.

If using Google, for instance, use the “advanced search” feature.  Try using an “exact phrase” and/or typing in additional words in the “with at least one of the words” box.

Using the domain feature, you can narrow your choices down to specific domains.  Example: Click the arrow and change it to “don’t” and type in .com.  Google will then only return sites that do not have the domain of  .com.

More Resources

The Research link from the library’s web page provides resources such as an MLA citation guide, web site evaluation guide, and statistical information.  You will also find specific course resource pages and subject guides.

A good source for writing help is The Owl at Purdue, Purdue University’s Writing Center.  This site walks you through the complete writing process.

Please remember that the LRC faculty and staff are here to assist you with your information needs.  Feel free to contact us by clicking the “Contact Us” link at the top of any library page and choosing the contact method you wish.  You may also call the reference desk directly at 574-6096.
