The following resources will help you with various assignments covered in HSS 201.

Online Databases

To access the databases while on campus click the online databases link from the library’s webpage.  For access to online databases while off campus click here. (Note:  A TTC ID card is needed for off campus access).  For help in using the databases see the tutorials and guides section of the library webpage found under the research help link.

SIRS databaseFor information on the most current War and conflict with Iraq you will find a tremendous amount of information under Special Features - Focus on Terrorism.  In addition to articles and websites, it includes quite a bit of multimedia resources including videos and audios, full interviews  (i.e. CBS/60 minutes and Saddam), an interactive timeline, radio and television speeches, etc.  For articles on earlier conflicts, use the basic or advanced search feature and use different search terms.

Facts.Com- Contains primary sources (written during the time period of the event). Database covers the period 1940 to the present.  Search using specific keywords.

NetLibrary - Numerous electronic books are available on all topics covered in HIS 131 through TTC’s Online library (netLibrary)Using keyword search, enter the topic or subject you are studying.  The resulting book titles are all fully available online. 

War Research  

The following websites provide information on various wars and conflicts involving the United States.

Search: World War II, Gulf War, Korean War, etc. for Frontline documentaries, oral histories, war stories, weapons and technology information.

Frequently asked questions and in depth answers concerning WWII including topics like: the beginnings of the war, different ethnic groups, living in the US, Tuskegee Airmen, etc.

Contains extensive information on World War II combat aircraft and the role the pilots and American citizens had in achieving victory.  Click on Epilog to war; or War Stories for actual interviews, events and articles written by or about people who served in the war.  Listen to sound clips of Flight demos, contains links to other museums, full of images of war.

Using the menu in the far left hand column click on: Wars: 20th century # select specific war.  Provides general information, documents, timelines, war stories, interviews, pictures, biographies, maps, etc.

Use the advanced search feature at http://www.google.com/advanced_image_search 
Type in the name of the war in the exact phrase box.

NOTE :   There are numerous websites on various wars. The ones listed above are just a sample.  For additional sites use a search engine like Google.com (Advanced Search) with specific keywords.  Remember, ANYONE one can create an internet site.  Always do some form of website evaluation before you decide it is a website to use and the information is reliable.


Tips and Techniques on Oral presentations and Interviewing

Annotated Bibliography Tutorial

The Research link from the library’s web page provides resources such as an APA citation guide, web site evaluation guide, and statistical information.  You will also find specific course resource pages and subject guides.

A good source for writing help is The Owl at Purdue, Purdue University’s Writing Center.  This site walks you through the complete writing process.
