All resources are accessible from computers anywhere on TTC campuses. FACTS.com

--Provides Top News Stories 1940 – present
--Contains Historic Documents & Event overviews 1940 – present
--Numerous articles (Primary documents) written during the time of the actual event.
--Contains Country Profiles
--Includes Maps, Photos, Charts, Biographies of key people, etc.
       
       
Example:  Looking at Cuba Historically

§       A search of events in the 1950s found an article dated 1/7/59. The article discusses Fidel Castro leading the Cuban Revolution & Batista being overthrown.  The article contains detailed information on the event activities leading up to the event.  Within the article are links to other articles written in the 50's about Cuba, US Politics, and the US Latin Policy. 

§         Doing a basic search on Cuba during the period 1950 –1965 found numerous articles from the World Digest Archives ( i.e. 1960 article on Cuba defections, articles on Castro, transcript of the Kennedy/Nixon debate), and other related stories.

Use this database to look up your country.  Then explore all the features.  Use the date features to look at what was written during the time of the actual event.  Also current articles may even give a reflection on things that have happened as a result of the event.

     Provides Country Profiles including Background notes that contain historic information.

Netlibrary – (Electronic Books)

--E-books.  Entire text viewable online through TTC’s online database. 
--E-books are available for 4 hour checkout periods.
--Search feature within books and index take you directly to specific pages. 
--Covers a wide variety of topics

                   
Example: Looking up the History of Cuba in netlibrary

Using the Advanced Search feature type in as subject Cuba and type in the word history as a keyword. 
Over 20 titles are found with titles such as :

The Cuban Counterrevolution by Jesus Arboleya
Bread, or Bullets! : Urban Labor and Spanish Colonialism in Cuba, 1850-1898
  by Joan Casanovas
Children of Colonial Despotism: Press, Politics, and Culture in Cuba, 1790-1840
  by Larry R. Jensen


Use this database to look up books on your country.  You can also type in specific events or the names of significant people to see if there are books written on, by or about them. To use this database off-campus you will need to create a netlibrary account.  (See tutorials under research help link).

Examples of Reference Books  (In library use only)

 Encyclopedia of Conflicts Since World War II  (4 volume set of world events.)  REF D 843 .E46 1999   (Available at MAIN) (Includes in-depth coverage of countries all over the world.  Discusses and Analyzes conflicts with detailed explanations of events.  Includes maps, chronologies, and bibliographies.  

Encyclopedia of World History – REF D 21 .E577 2000 (Available at MAIN)  Includes detailed information on more than 200 countries.  Includes a timeline detailing significant people, places, dates, and events in history from 15,000 B.C. on.

More Resources

A good source for writing help is The Owl at Purdue, Purdue University’s Writing Center.  This site walks you through the complete writing process.
