Books

When searching for books about your author or critical essays about a work, start with a words or phrases search. (NOTE: An author search will only find books written by the author).  Once you locate the book, use the index wisely.  Some books will index the author’s name, works of, or list the actual title of the work.  (i.e. In resources on Alice Walker the index may show the following:

•  Walker, Alice  (under this heading may be, themes, styles, works of).

•  Works of (under this heading may be the titles of her works).

•  Color Purple (within the index her works may be listed alphabetically by title).

Relates history to literature.  Includes novels, short stories, plays, poems, biographies, essays, speeches, and documents.  Gives focus on the work, events in history at the time the literary work takes place and / or at the time the work was written. 

Great American Writers    REF PS 221.G74 2002 (M)
Includes biographical info and reader’s guides on many Twentieth Century writers.  Focus is given to major works and the writer’s life.

Online Sources

The following online databases are available through the Trident Technical College Learning Resources Center and will be most helpful in ENG 102. Additional databases are found on the LRC web page (http://www.tridenttech.edu/library.htm).  Databases can be accessed on and off campus.  Access off-campus requires a current Library ID number (13 digit bar code number found on your Trident ID card).  

Literature Resource Center – Provides biographies, bibliographies, and critical analyses of more than 120,000 authors from every age and literary discipline.

Expanded Academic ASAP (Accessed through Infotrac) - Provides many full text articles from scholarly journals, news magazines, and newspapers in all areas from arts and the humanities to social sciences, science and technology.

JSTOR- includes FULL-TEXT access to back issues of more than 117 journals in the humanities, social sciences, and sciences. Articles are usually at least two years old with some dating back to the 1800s.  Adobe Acrobat Reader is necessary to view and print from JSTOR.

Magill on Literature Plus - Combines the quality content of both MagillOnLiterature and MagillOnAuthors in a fully integrated and enhanced single database.  The database is composed of approximately 35,000 critical analyses of individual works of literature, 6,500 biographical records, more than 1,000 images, a glossary of 1,310 literary terms and more.

NetLibrary - E-Books (electronic books) contains thousands of FULL TEXT electronic versions of published non-fiction books.  For literary criticisms use keywords or subject terms “criticism” and “O’ Connor”  (author’s name).

A good source for writing help is The Owl at Purdue, Purdue University’s Writing Center.  This site walks you through the complete writing process.
