ARV 161-Visual Communications Media

The following  resources will be helpful in the various assignments covered in ARV 161.

To access the databases.click the online databases link from the library’s webpage. (Note:  A TTC ID card is needed for off campus access).  For help in using the databases see the tutorials and guides section of the library webpage found under the research help link.

Online Databases

Biography Resource Center - This database offers biographical information found in commonly used and respected reference sources.  In addition, full text magazine articles and selected websites are available.

With the Biography Resource Center the following searches are available

¨      Name Search (you know the name of the person you are researching)

¨      Biographical Facts Search (customize your search by occupation, nationality, etc. if you are searching
for someone in a particular career and you don’t have a name)

Note:  In the Biography Resource Center you may have to change the wording or title of your occupation. For example: Someone who specializes in Environmental Design is an Environmental Designer.  So on your search use Environmental Designer.  Someone specializing in Landscape Architecture is a Landscape Architect.  Also some occupations that are the same or similar may have slightly different names. Therefore you may need to use Urban Planner instead of Urban Designer.  Under Biographical Facts Search there is a link to View Occupation Terms.  This lists all the career titles included in the database.

Expanded Academic ASAP or General Reference Center - Use these two databases if you have an individual you are interested in that perhaps is more current or contemporary.  Perhaps recent magazine or journal articles have highlighted their works.  Using keyword searching:
¨      Search the person’s name “in quotes” (i.e. "Shelia Bridges")
        ¨
Search by a career (especially contemporary ones) and the articles may give the name of someone.
¨      Articles that are retrieved that say Text with Graphics may have useful visuals.

You may print or email Infotrac articles.

                                                                            Internet Resources

Exploring Occupations  -Fantastic site found at http://online.onetcenter.org/. This site is part of the Occupational Information Online network. It contains descriptions on over 950 occupations. Each description includes the occupation's tasks, skills required, knowledge needed, wages (broken down by state), trends in the occupational field, etc. Information and statistics are provided by the US Dept. of Labor. Information is available on many "art" and "creative" type occupations.

Visuals
https://webauth.ncsu.edu/wrap-bin/was16.cgi?affil- Excellent site with Images for Architecture, Art and Design.

www.google.com
- Use google’s image search to help find available visuals.  Use the advanced search feature and remember to use quotes (“”) around the person’s name.
http://www.picsearch.com/ - Searches just for pictures and images.  Also has an advanced search feature.

Other Websites - The Internet will have literally thousands of websites on various careers and persons.  Remember….ANYONE can put ANYTHING on the Internet.   Look carefully over any website to determine if it is a good one to use (i.e. who wrote it, credentials).

Copyright – The library has a number of books and other resources on the issue of Copyright.  The government's official copyright site is found at http://www.copyright.gov/
