When searching for information in the area of African-American history and culture, you might want to use some of the following words or phrases: “African-American culture,” “black studies,” “Blacks in ____ (fill in the blank, for example, with, medicine, literature, etc.),” or “Afro-Americans in ____.”
ONLINE DATABASES

Biography Resource Center - Contains biographies on over 1000 individuals from various walks of life. Biographical essays are taken from reputable reference sources. Also includes full text magazine articles and selected websites on individuals. Examples of Historic figures included in this database are Truth, Sojourner, Wells, Ida B., Brown, William Wells, Banneker, Benjamin, etc. Biographical entries also include bibliographies and reference lists of additional Information.
JSTOR - Provides access hundreds of articles taken from scholarly journals in various subject areas. Some articles date back to the 1900's. Included in the African American Studies journal selections are the Journal of Black Studies and the Journal of Negro History.
NetLibrary - Numerous electronic books are available on all topics covered in HIS 130 through TTC’s Online library (netLibrary). Using keyword search, enter the topic or subject you are studying. The resulting book titles are all fully available online. Examples of the titles found in NetLibrary include:

INTERNET SITES
From Slavery to Freedom: The African-American Pamphlet Collection, 1824-1909
This collection presented by the Library of Congress "presents 397 pamphlets from the Rare Book and Special Collections Division, published from 1824 through 1909, by African-American authors and others who wrote about slavery, African colonization, Emancipation, Reconstruction, and related topics. The materials range from personal accounts and public orations to organizational reports and legislative speeches. Among the authors represented are Frederick Douglass, Kelly Miller, Charles Sumner, Mary Church Terrell, and Booker T. Washington." The collection can be searched by keyword, or browsed by subject / author. Documents are available full text.
