Online Databases

Many databases on a wide variety of topics are available through TTC's library. These databases provide periodical articles that run the gamut in the area of Music. Below are listed a few of the online databases which may be particularly helpful.

• Infotrac - Expanded Academic - This particular database offers information on a wide range of topics related to music, including information on a wide variety of music from different cultures. Some of the periodical titles included with Infotrac are: 19th Century Music, American Music, Black Music Research Journal, Czech Music, Folk Music Journal, and many more.
• SIRS - Offers a wide variety of databases specific to individual disciplines including SIRS Renaissance, which focuses on the Humanities.
• Biography Resource Center- A wonderful resource for information and details about musicians, composers, and others related to the field of Music.

Books (Netlibrary)

Netlibrary books are electronic books ("e-books") that can be viewed through TTC's library webpage. Users can access them anywhere they have access to the Internet (here on TTC Campuses, home, or work) once a user's account has been created. Netlibrary can be found under Online Databases (on the black menu bar from the library home page) and instructions are then provided for a creating an account to check out one of these e-books. For more assistance, ask a reference librarian or call the reference desk at 574-6096 during regular hours of operation.

Websites

Here are listed Music websites focusing on various types of cultural Music. These websites have been reviewed. However, when many websites on the Internet have not undergone a review process. Remember almost anyone can create a website so it is important to fully evaluate a website before using it as a source for assignments. For additional assistance, review the criteria found in the Website Evaluation found under the Research Help link on the black menu bar on the library's homepage.

African Music

1. http://www.dancedrummer.com/ - This site provides video and audio demonstrations of African music as performed by Kevin O'Sullivan (a Fulbright scholar who studied African music in Ghana. This site also provides demonstrations and explanations of the various types of drums used in the music. No downloads seemed to be necessary, but try Windows Media Player if needed. (This can be downloaded for free.)
2. International Library of Music - http://ilam.ru.ac.za/ - This site provides historical recordings of African drum music. To listen to music, click on SWP records and click on the item you wish to hear. There is an option to buy or to look at a track list and from there the user can choose one of the MP3s. Windows Media Player is necessary to listen to the MP3s.
3. African Music and Dance Ensemble (through Berkeley) - http://www.cnmat.berkeley.edu/~ladzekpo/Ensemble.html - This page provides links to video clips of West African music with drums. Although no plug-ins were listed as necessary Windows Media Player may be a good option.

Chinese Music

1. Art of China Homepage /Chinese Music  - http://pasture.ecn.purdue.edu/agenhtml/agenmc/china/cmusic.html - This site provides audio recordings of violin solos, folk music, and other songs. Scroll down to "Some Sample Video Clips." No download of plug-ins appear to be necessary, but Windows Media Player may be a good option.
2. The Internet Chinese Music Archive The Great Empire of China - Traditional Music - http://chinese-music.dsi.internet2.edu/html/traditional.html - (Through the University of Kansas East Asian Library ) - Listen to audio clips of traditional music by clicking on one of many songs listed. No plug-ins appear to be necessary, but Windows Media Player may be a good option.

Indian Music

1. South Indian Classical (Carnatic) Music Krithi Archive - http://www.ecse.rpi.edu/Homepages/shivkuma/personal/music/ - This site lets you listen to a particular piece (such as Ada Modi) by clicking on "real audio." Downloading Real Player to listen to the music on this website is necessary, but the download is free.

Folk Music

1. Anthology of American Folk Music - http://www.folkways.si.edu/40090.htm - Listen to sound clips from Volumes 1,2, and 3 of this Anthology. Download of Real Player is necessary, but is available for free.
2. UVA Library Exhibits: Lift Every Voice - www.lib.virginia.edu/speccol/exhibits/music/ballads.html - University of Virginia Library website which include information on American Folk Ballads as well as several audio clips. The sound clips are provided through a Quick Time Plug-in or through MP3s.
