Scholarship Programs |
The Trident Technical College Foundation offers a number of scholarships provided by area individuals, businesses, civic organizations and nonprofit groups. Awards are competitive, based upon the stated criteria, and recipients are selected by the College’s Scholarship Committee. If you have never attended college, you must submit your official high school transcript to the registrars office. If you have attended other colleges, you must submit official copies of all your college transcripts to the registrars office.
The scholarship application process is currently under revision. Please continue to check this site periodically for updates to the scholarship process.
The scholarship application for scholarships that will be awarded for fall term of 2009 will be available January 2, 2008 Detailed application instructions will be provided on this page beginning January 2, 2008.
What You Need to Know Before Applying for Scholarships

Applicants must meet all eligibility, application and special application requirements and submit all required documents in order to be considered for a scholarship.

Applicants should review all the criteria for each scholarship to establish their personal eligibility and to determine the documentation to submit.
- Applicants will receive notification of their award status through email to their Campus Cruiser accounts. Recipients of scholarships will have their award applied to their student account.
- Amounts are based on availability of funds at the time the Scholarship Committee reviews the eligible applications and do not require repayment. These scholarships are for use at Trident Technical College and are not transferable to another institution.
Important Definitions
New Student: You are a new student if you have not completed credit courses at TTC. Please note that if the last school you attended was high school or if you are currently attending high school, you must submit an official transcript to the admissions office in order to be eligible to apply for scholarships. If you have attended an insitution or institutions of higher education after completing your high school diploma, you must submit an official transcript to the admissions office for each school you attended in order to be eligible to apply for scholarships.
Continuing Student: You are a continuing student if you attend TTC currently or have attended within the last three terms.
Returning Student: You are a returning student if you have attended TTC before, but not within the past three terms.
Residency Status: Your state of legal residence as defined by the Commission on Higher Education. Please note that "tri-county" refers to Charleston, Berkeley, and Dorchester counties.
Full Time: You are a full time student if you are attempting to complete 12 or more credit hours in one semester.
Part Time: You are a part time student if you are attempting less than 12 credit hours in one semester. Please note that in order to be considered for scholarships, you must be attempting a minimum of 6 credit hours in one semester.
Grade Point Average: Your most recent cumulative grade point average (GPA) as of the scholarship application deadline.
Hours Attempted: All hours for which you have been billed and earned the grade of A, B, C, D, F, W, SC, or U.
Hours Completed: All hours for which you have been billed and earned the grade of A, B, C, D, F, SC, or U.
Need: Any amount remaining after your cost of attendance minus your expected family income equals your need based on your completed Federal Application for Student Aid.
Unmet Need: Any mount remaining after your cost of attendance minus your expected family income minus any financial aid awarded equals your unmet need based on your completed Federal Application for Student Aid.
Recommendation Letters: All letters must be from individuals other than family members. If the applicant is currently enrolled at TTC (including Dual Credit Students), a faculty member or administrator in the applicant's course of study must submit one of the letters. If the applicant is a New Student, one letter must come from a teacher, supervisor, employer or other unrelated adult.

(M) Multi-term: The scholarship is available for more than one semester, provided the recipient continues to meet the qualifications each semester. Failure to continue to meet the scholarship qualifications means the award will not continue. Any student who receives an award and then drops out of all classes may be subject to repaying the award. (N)(R) The Sharon and William Asbill Associate in Arts and Science Scholarship Fund
Created in 2007 by Sharon and William Asbill to assist students enrolled in either the Associate in Arts or Associate in Science degree program who intend to transfer to a four-year college to complete a four-year degree and who have delayed the start or completion of their higher education goals because of family, financial or health reasons.
To qualify: Enroll in and maintain at least 6 semester credit hours; have a minimum GPA of 2.5 in either the Associate in Arts or Associate in Science degree (transfer) program.
To apply: Submit a TTC Scholarship Application; provide a brief statement describing your educational and career goals and the circumstances that you had to overcome to continue your higher education goals.

Award amount/use: Award of up to $1,000 for tuition, books, required course materials and equipment. Eligibility continues up to three semesters so long as a minimum GPA of 2.5 is maintained. |
| (N)(R) Agricultural Society of South Carolina Fund
Established in 2006 in honor of Dr. Merle Shepard to encourage motivated TTC students to pursue productive careers in horticulture.
To qualify. Be a new or returning student entering or currently enrolled in TTC’s Horticulture program; maintain at least six credit hours per semester with a cumulative grade point average of 3.0; be a South Carolina resident; and show financial need.
To apply. Submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid, a TTC Scholarship Application and two letters of recommendation. If student is currently enrolled at TTC, at least one of the letters must be written by one of the student’s instructors. See above.
Award Amount/Use. One time award of up to $1,500 for tuition, fees, books, and education-related supplies and equipment.

| (N)(R) Saul Alexander Foundation Scholarship
Created in 1952 by Mr. Alexander's bequest, the Foundation provides grants to benefit charitable causes in Charleston and Dorchester counties, with the TTC student scholarship program as one of the beneficiaries.
To qualify: Resident of Charleston, Berkeley or Dorchester county; enroll in and maintain at least 12 semester credit hours; have a 3.0 or higher cumulative GPA in a TTC associate degree, diploma or certificate program.

| (R)(M) American Business Women's Association - Ft. Sumter Chapter Endowed Scholarship
Assists students in need of financial support, particularly women, to acquire skills to become independent, productive members of the region's work force.
To qualify: Current tri-county resident; have completed at least 18 semester credit hours in an associate degree, diploma, certificate or college transfer associate degree program at TTC or other accredited college with a 2.5 or higher cumulative GPA; enroll in and maintain at least six semester credit hours per semester with a 2.5 or higher cumulative GPA. Special consideration is given to students who are single parents with custody of one or more children. To remain eligible, criteria must be met each semester.

Award amount/use: Up to $650 for Fall and Spring semesters for up to two years if student continues to qualify. Use for tuition, books, required course materials and equipment. Maximum total award $2,600.

| (N)(R) The Sharon and William Asbill Scholarship Fund
Because of the positive impact the profession has had on her life, esthetician Sharon Asbill established this fund in 2005 to benefit a student committed to building a productive and successful career in the esthetics field.
To qualify: Be enrolled in TTC’s Esthetics Certificate program. Must maintain at least six semester credit hours and a 3.0 or higher cumulative GPA.
To apply: Submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid, a TTC Scholarship Application, a TTC Scholarship Application, and two letters of recommendation. If student is returning, one of the two letters of recommendation must be provided by a TTC faculty member in the Cosmetology and/or Esthetics programs. See above.

Award amount/use: $500 for a full-time student (enrolled in 12 or more hours) or $250 for a part-time student (enrolled in at least six hours) for tuition, books, equipment/supplies/uniforms required for the program, and fees for applications and licensure exams.

| (N)(R)(M) Bank of America Scholarship Endowment
Established in honor of the faculty and staff of TTC who raised an unprecedented $37,215 with 98 percent participation during the 2000 TTC Campus Campaign. Assists students in need of financial support to acquire skills to become independent, productive members of the region's work force.
To qualify: 2.0 or higher cumulative GPA (or the equivalent) in high school or at TTC; enroll in and maintain at least six semester credit hours per semester with a 2.0 or higher cumulative GPA in a TTC associate degree, diploma or certificate program. Preference is given to minority students. To remain eligible, criteria must be met each semester.

Award amount/use: Not to exceed the cost of tri-county resident tuition for the number of semester credit hours in which the student is enrolled. Awarded each Fall and Spring semester until program completion, if student continues to qualify.

| (R) Arthur Brabham Memorial/Greater Charleston Restaurant Association Scholarship
Established by the Greater Charleston Restaurant Association for students majoring in TTC's Culinary Arts program.
To qualify: Tri-county resident for two years; enrolled in a Culinary Arts program; completed at least 12 semester credit hours of study; and have a 2.5 or higher cumulative GPA. Preference is given to students who currently work within the restaurant industry and those who plan to remain in the tri-county area after graduation.

| (R) Dr. Charles W. Branch Endowed Scholarship
Created by the late Dr. Charles W. Branch, TTC president from 1985 to 1990, to assist students who intend to enter the teaching profession.
To qualify: Must be a returning student accepted into a TTC associate degree program with intent to enter the teaching profession; enroll in and maintain at least 12 semester credit hours; and be a current Phi Theta Kappa (honor society) member.

(N)(R) Carraway-Green Memorial Scholarship
Established in 2005 by Jim and Ellen Green in memory of their fathers, Rev. W.J. Carraway and Mr. J.C. Green, for the benefit of students enrolled at TTC in an associate degree program who demonstrate achievement and financial need.
To qualify: Must be a new or returning full-time student who is a S.C. resident and demonstrates financial need. Enrolled in 12 or more semester hours in an associate degree program with a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.5
To apply: Complete a TTC Scholarship Application, a Free Application for Federal Student Aid and submit at least two letters of recommendation from non-family members with at least one letter written by one of the student's instructors. For returning students, one of the letters must be from a faculty member or administrator in the applicant's course of study.
Award amount/use: For tuition and fees, textbooks and education-related supplies and equipment. A one-time award of up to $1,000.

| (R) Charleston County Forty & Eight Nurses Training Scholarship
Established in 2004 by the Charleston County Forty & Eight, Voiture 974 in honor of all veterans. The scholarship is a community service project through which the society recognizes the importance of the nursing profession and assists TTC students enrolled in the ADN program who best meet the award criteria.
To qualify: Enrolled in TTC's Nursing associate degree program in all nursing courses required each semester of the ADN program and have a 2.5 or higher cumulative GPA.
Special application requirement: Must submit the donor's scholarship application in addition to the TTC application. | (R) Charleston Kennel Club Scholarship
Established by the Charleston Kennel Club, an all-breed club dedicated to the advancement, welfare and sport of the purebred dog, to benefit students enrolled in TTC's Veterinary Technology program who demonstrate academic achievement.
To qualify: Show financial need (greatest financial need will be considered if two or more candidates are equally qualified); tri-county resident; and a returning student enrolled full- or part-time in the program; have completed at least six semester credit hours in the program; and a 3.5 or higher GPA in program courses.
Special requirement for recipient. Make a presentation at a Charleston Kennel Club meeting. The recipient should talk about his/her course of study and plans to use his/her education in the future.

Established by Phi Theta Kappa in honor of Dr. Robert N. Clark, formerly the senior advisor of the honor society and an English instructor at TTC.
To qualify: Enroll in and maintain at least 12 semester credit hours and have attended TTC for at least one semester with a 3.0 or higher cumulative GPA.

Established by the Coastal Carolina Camellia Society to encourage motivated TTC students to pursue productive careers in horticulture.

| (R) Coastal District Dental Society Scholarship
Sponsored by the Coastal District Dental Society to benefit Dental Hygiene and Dental Assisting students.
To qualify: S.C. resident who has completed one semester of Dental Hygiene or Dental Assisting courses with a 2.0 or higher cumulative GPA.

| (N)(R) Community, Family and Child Studies Career Development Scholarship
Designed to meet the educational needs of students in the Early Care and Education, School-Age Child Care and Human Services programs who are ineligible for funding through the TEACH program.
To qualify: New or returning student pursuing a certificate, diploma or associate degree in Early Care and Education, School-Age Child Care or Human Services program and have a 2.0 or higher cumulative GPA.

(R) Nathalie Dupree Culinary Scholarship
Established in 2006 in honor of Nathalie Dupree after the Charleston Food + Wine Festival’s initial 2006 event. Ms. Dupree is a notable culinary author and television personality. This scholarship creates a unique opportunity for students as the recipient receives not only the scholarship itself, but also the opportunity for an apprenticeship with Ms. Dupree.
To qualify: Enrolled in a TTC Culinary Institute of Charleston program having successfully completed a minimum of 24 credit hours in the program and have a 3.0 or higher cumulative GPA. Recipient will receive scholarship, an apprenticeship with Nathalie Dupree and an opportunity to study abroad.
Special application requirement: Must submit the donor's scholarship application in addition to the TTC application. Copies of the application are available in the 920 building, room 112D. Applicants must also submit a two page essay stating interests/goals in the culinary studies.

Award amount/use: (1) Up to the cost of tuition, books and fees for the number of semester credit hours enrolled in for the Culinary Arts career path for one semester.(2) payment for internship hours with Ms. Dupree (3) payment of costs for brief culinary study abroad. |
| (N)(R) Patricia Thomas Dupree Memorial Scholarship Endowment
Designed to assist motivated and committed students enrolled in the Accounting associate degree program at TTC, this scholarship reflects Ms. Dupree's lifelong commitment to the accounting profession.
To qualify: Tri-county resident; have a 3.5 or higher cumulative GPA in high school or at TTC; enroll in and maintain at least six semester credit hours with a 3.5 or higher cumulative GPA in TTC's Accounting associate degree program; and have demonstrated leadership in school, civic and/or community activities.
Special application requirement: A 750-word essay by the applicant focusing on one or more principal intellectual interests and related life goals.

| (R) McConnell Dupris/Greater Charleston Hotel and Motel Association Scholarship
Established for students in Culinary Arts Technology, Hospitality and Tourism Management programs.
To qualify: Returning students pursuing an associate degree in Culinary Arts Technology or Hospitality and Tourism Management at TTC; enrolled at TTC in at least 12 semester credit hours; and have a 3.0 or higher cumulative GPA. Preference is given to tri-county residents and for those working in the hospitality industry who plan to remain in the tri-county area after graduation.

| (R) Excellence in Dentistry Scholarship
Sponsored by Drs. Keith Daulton and Christopher Caputo of Periodontal Associates, P.A. for a Dental Hygiene student.
To qualify: S.C. resident who has completed three semesters (Spring/Summer/Fall) of Dental Hygiene courses with a 3.0 or higher cumulative GPA.
Special application requirement: Applicant to submit a paragraph reflecting a true understanding of the importance of excellence in dentistry, especially in dental hygiene.
To apply: Submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid, a TTC Scholarship Application and two letters of recommendation. At least one of the recommendation letters must attest to applicant's exceptional clinical and professional skills. See above.

| (R) Exchange Club of Charleston Scholarship
Benefits tri-county area students who have a history of involvement in community service.
To qualify: Tri-county resident who has completed freshman (or equivalent) year of college; 3.0 or higher cumulative GPA; and demonstrated community service involvement.
Special application requirement: Attend an Exchange Club of Charleston meeting to accept the award and, if requested, give a brief thank you speech to club members.

| (N)(R) Fifty/Fifty Fund
Established in 2004 to assist Developmental Studies students with their equipment, books and supplies needs.
To qualify: Be a new or returning student in a Developmental Studies program with a need for assistance with equipment, books and supplies.
To apply: Submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid, a TTC Scholarship Application and one letter of recommendation which must be written by one of the student’s instructors. See above.
Award Special Application Requirement: Student must submit a 150-250 word statement of need.
Award Amount/Use: One time award not to exceed the cost of equipment, books and supplies.

| (R)(M) Patricia Barrack Gibson Endowed Scholarship
Established in 2006 by Patricia Gibson who served as Dean in both Student Services and Academic Affairs to assist students in pursuing a degree that will allow them to enter the teaching profession.
To qualify: Be enrolled in an Associate of Arts or Associate of Science degree program and a tri-county resident. Must be a returning TTC student, having completed twelve semester credit hours and attained a 2.5 or higher cumulative GPA. To remain eligible recipient must enroll in and maintain at least six semester credit hours and a 2.5 or higher cumulative GPA. Must document tutoring experience at TTC or in another organized tutoring program in the community or demonstrate active volunteerism through citizenship activities such as church, charitable, civic or youth groups.

Established in memory of Ms. Gilbert, a lifelong Charleston resident. Despite being born with spina bifida, she was an honor graduate of St. Andrews High School, attended TTC maintaining a 4.0 GPA and earned an associate degree in Accounting.
To qualify: Available to Accounting students; but if no eligible candidates apply, the award is open to students enrolled in the fields of Automotive Technology, Physical and Occupational Therapy or Air Conditioning/Refrigeration Mechanics. New students must be high school graduates or equivalent with a B average or higher. Returning students must have attended TTC or any accredited two- or four-year college, completed six semester credit hours and attained a 2.5 or higher cumulative GPA. Offered by the Alpha Omicron Chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society in memory of Ernie Gray, a 1997 TTC graduate, active PTK member, Navy retiree, lifelong learner, supporter of TTC and community servant.
To qualify: Enrolled with a declared major in a program culminating in an associate degree or certificate; have completed at least six semester credit hours at TTC applicable to an associate degree or certificate with a 3.0 or higher cumulative GPA; and have a documented record of community and/or college service during the 12 months prior to the application deadline. Preference will be given to nontraditional students.
Special Application Requirement: A one-page, typed document in any format (i.e., essay, list, etc.) describing the applicant's community and/or college service within the past 12 months.

Founded by Dr. Archie Lugenbeel, former dean of TTC's Allied Health Sciences division, for associate degree and diploma students in selected Allied Health programs.
To qualify: Second-year student in the Occupational Therapy Assistant, Physical Therapist Assistant, Radiologic Technology or Respiratory Care program; have a 2.5 or higher cumulative GPA; and enrolled in at least 12 semester credit hours, unless prerequisite courses or general education coursework is complete and recipient needs only professional sequence courses. In this case, the Allied Health advisor for each program area must approve enrollment hours, and the recipient must be enrolled in professional courses.
Special Application Requirement: Applicants who are receiving the following are NOT eligible for this scholarship: another scholarship award during this semester, employee tuition waiver or reimbursement, or financial assistance (except PELL, GSL, CWS).

Established in the memory of Latarsha Maxwell by the Wright family and Latarsha's mother, Patty Maxwell, to assist students in TTC's Pharmacy Technician Program by providing awards for those who demonstrate a financial need.
To qualify: May be either a new or returning full-time or part-time student in TTC's Pharmacy Technician Program (although a returning student is preferred) who demonstrates financial need. Dr. Charles E. Palmer, founder and president of Palmer College, was instrumental in the merger of Palmer and Berkeley-Charleston-Dorchester Technical Education Center to form Trident Technical College. His lifelong commitment to education is reflected in this legacy to students who participate in the Communities in Schools program.
To qualify: In the current year, a graduating senior of Septima P. Clark Corporate Academy. Must apply for admission at TTC, declare a major in any associate degree or diploma program, and meet with TTC's associate dean of Counseling and Career Development Services prior to meeting with an academic advisor or registering for classes. Must have at least one conference with the current Clark Academy counselor no later than one month prior to the end of his/her first semester at TTC. Established in 2005 by colleagues and friends in honor of Ann Hosford Smith. Ms. Smith served as department head for Diagnostic and Imaging Services and as coordinator for the Health Sciences certificate in Phlebotomy. She retires in 2006 after serving 17 years in the Allied Health Division.
To qualify: Be a returning student enrolled in the Phlebotomy program; have completed at least 10 semester credit hours which include: AHS 105, AHS 142 and AHS 143 with a grade of C or higher; have a GPA of at least 3.0 and demonstrate financial need.

Founded by the Snee Farm Garden Club to assist TTC students who live in Charleston County, specifically the East Cooper area, and who have financial need.

Benefits students enrolled in TTC's Radio and Television Broadcasting program.
To qualify: Must have demonstrated broadcasting proficiency, enrolled in at least 12 semester credit hours, completed one semester in TTC's Radio and Television Broadcasting program, have a 3.0 or higher cumulative GPA and provide documented evidence of interest in the profession and College and community involvement. Established by George Struzyna, former vice president for finance at TTC, this scholarship assists single parents or children of single parents.
To qualify: Must have a 2.75 or higher cumulative GPA, or the high school equivalent for new students. Must be a single parent or have lived as a child of a single parent at some time up to the age of 18. Applicant must clearly demonstrate integrity of character, honesty, stability, a sound sense of family values and high moral standards.
Special application requirement: A signed statement from a parent attesting the applicant is a single parent or has lived as a child of a single parent at some time up to the age of 18.

Established by Phi Theta Kappa in honor of TTC President Dr. Mary Thornley, this scholarship recognizes academic achievement of continuing TTC students.
To qualify: Must have completed two semesters at TTC, have a 3.75 or higher cumulative GPA and enroll in and maintain at least 12 semester credit hours. Must demonstrate service to TTC and not be a current Phi Theta Kappa officer.

| (R) Trident Association of Legal Assistants (TALA) Scholarship
Benefits TTC students pursuing a Legal Assistant associate degree program or a certificate in the Paralegal program who are active members of the Trident Association of Legal Assistants (TALA) and are providing exemplary service to that student organization, TTC and the community.
To qualify: Must have completed at least six semester credit hours of legal courses at TTC with a 3.0 or higher cumulative GPA; and demonstrated active membership and exemplary service to TALA, TTC and the community through participation in TALA-sponsored events and activities in the preceding semester. Must maintain at least six semester credit hours at TTC with a 3.0 or higher cumulative GPA and continue to work toward his/her Legal Assistant associate degree or Paralegal certificate at TTC. Awards will be based equally upon academics and club service.

| (R) Trident Health System Nursing Scholarship
Established by Trident Health System to benefit Nursing students.
To qualify: Applicant must be a student enrolled in TTC’s Nursing Program who has successfully completed at least two semesters of nursing, and has at least one full semester remaining at the time of the award; has a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.5. Submit two letters of recommendation; (One letter must be from a clinical instructor verifying the applicant’s (a) clinical ability, (b) good attendance to class and clinicals with no pattern of absences and (c) no more than one unsuccessful attempt in a clinical nursing course. The second letter must be from an SNA advisor verifying active SNA membership which is defined as: attends SNA meetings regularly, with only occasional absences and participates in at least 50% of the fundraising and community service activities sponsored by the SNA.); complete a TTC Scholarship Application, and a Free Application for Federal Student Aid.

Honors Maj. Campbell Proudfit, USAF (Ret.), graduate of TTC and Alumni Association Board member, and dedicated volunteer for the College and the community. Benefits a continuing TTC student in need of financial assistance who demonstrates extensive volunteerism to the College and/or community, with preference given to College service.
To qualify: Show financial need; have completed at least 24 semester credit hours in a program of study; must enroll in and maintain at least six semester credit hours and be preparing for a career change; must demonstrate extensive volunteerism to the College and/or community; and have a 2.5 or higher cumulative GPA.

Established with a bequest from Susan Wallace, a former TTC student and administrative specialist for the Business Technology Division, in appreciation of the assistance given to her by firemen from the town of Mt. Pleasant.
To qualify: Tri-county resident in need of financial assistance and currently employed by and remain employed by a county, municipal or public service district fire department in South Carolina; enrolled in the Fire Service career path, in TTC courses that are program requirements; returning to school to enhance a career in fire service; have and maintain a 2.5 or higher cumulative GPA; and be enrolled in and maintain at least six semester credit hours in the program. To remain eligible criteria must be met each semester.

To qualify: Student must be pursuing an Associate Degree in Mechanical, Civil or Environmental Engineering Technology. Student must be a South Carolina resident and must have and maintain a grade point average of not less than a 3.0. While not required, it is the desire of the Water Environment Association of South Carolina that the recipient be a second-year student or a first year student who is a member of the Association and who is employed as a water or wastewater operator certified by the South Carolina Environmental Certification Board.

| (N)(R)(M) W. Athell Yon Endowed Automotive Scholarship
Established in 1993 in memory of W. Athell Yon, in recognition of his outstanding professional contributions to the automotive industry, TTC and the community. A member of TTC's governing board, the College's Automotive Technology Advisory Committee and the Area Commission, he organized the Independent Garage Owners of South Carolina, worked with the American Association of Motor Administrators and was named to the Board of Directors of the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence.
To qualify: Pursuing an Automotive Technology associate degree or Automotive Servicing certificate.
New students must be high school graduates or equivalent, and returning students must have attended TTC or any accredited college and completed a minimum of six semester credit hours with a 2.5 or higher GPA. Must enroll in and maintain a minimum of six semester credit hours with a 3.0 or higher cumulative GPA in AUT-prefix courses. To remain eligible, criteria must be met each semester.
Special application requirements: Submit a paragraph explaining interest in the automotive career field and professional goals.

(R) Linda Ziegler Humanities and Social Sciences Scholarship Fund
Established in 2006 in honor of Dr. Linda Ziegler, former TTC Vice President of Academics.
To qualify: Be a declared major in the Associate of Arts program at TTC; have completed at least twenty-four credit hours toward a major in the Associate of Arts program at TTC; maintain at least twelve credit hours per semester with a cumulative grade point average of 3.0; be a tri-county resident for at least one year; and demonstrate an intent to transfer to another institution after graduation from TTC to pursue advanced studies in a Humanities/Social Sciences discipline. Preference is given to those who have overcome obstacles such as socioeconomic or educational disadvantages and are members of groups such as African Americans or Native Americans or of Hispanic descent.
