What is College Goal Sunday?
College Goal Sunday (CGS) is a statewide charitable program that provides free information and assistance to students and families applying for college financial aid. CGS mobilizes financial aid professionals, primarily from state colleges and universities, to help college-bound students and their families complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). This form is required for any student seeking federal financial aid, including grants and loans, at all schools in the nation.
When is College Goal Sunday and where are the College Goal Sunday sites?
College Goal Sunday will be held in South Carolina in Spring 2008 in communities along the I-95 corridor. Trident Technical College – February 16, 2008 – 10 a.m. – 1 p.m.
Who participates in College Goal Sunday?
CGS is open to all college-bound students and their families but particularly targets low-income students who need financial aid to attend college and who need help applying for that aid.
What should I bring to College Goal Sunday?
Students and their parents should bring completed 2007 IRS 1040 tax returns, W-2 statements and other 2007 income and benefits information. (Current bank statements, untaxed income records for the previous year (Social Security, Temporary Assistance to Needy Families, welfare, or veterans benefits records), driver's license (if any) and alien registration card (if you are not a U.S. citizen)). This information is helpful, but not required.”
What if I can’t attend College Goal Sunday?
If you can’t attend CGS, tune in to SC Educational Television for the program entitled, “Finding Money for College” or contact the financial aid office at a local college. They will be glad to help you.
Why is College Goal Sunday important?
CGS provides assistance in applying for financial aid to families who need it. By delivering help to families in their own communities, CGS helps ensure that students get the help they need crossing the barrier to qualify for financial aid.
What if I am not sure if I am going to college directly after high school?
Many students are not sure if they will be attending college right after high school. Filling out the FASFA does not obligate you to attend. However, completing the FAFSA form will ensure deadlines are not missed if the student decides to apply to college later in the year.
Who sponsors College Goal Sunday?
In South Carolina, College Goal Sunday is a cooperative, charitable effort of the South Carolina Commission on Higher Education. It is funded by the Lumina Foundation for Education, a private foundation with a particular interest in higher education.
