Basic Furniture-Making Skills

Learn how to work safely with basic equipment. Topics include shop safety, ergonomics, protective clothing, respirators and dust control. Also covered are qualities of lumber, basic blueprint reading and design, correct use of unpowered and powered hand tools, joinery, clamping and gluing, and finish hardware. You construct a gallery-quality jewelry box, both in class and at home, using a wood of your choice. An additional fee ranging from $80 to $100 is charged to cover the cost of the course book and materials used in the project. Prerequisite:  Basic math skills.

Intermediate Furniture Making

This course builds on the skills learned in the basic course by introducing bench-type power equipment. Topics include the proper and safe use of the planer, joiner, table saw, cutoff saw, router, shaper, molder, band saw and sanders. Proper finishing techniques are taught in the use of spray equipment, brushes, waxes and sandpaper. You construct a small accent table, both in class and at home, with wood of your choice. An additional fee ranging from $80 to $120 is charged to cover the cost of the materials you use in the project. Prerequisite:  Basic Furniture-Making Skills or equivalent.  Books not included
