RTV FAQ's

Here are some of the most common questions from people who are interested in our program. Select a question you would like answered, or scroll down to read all the answers.

The cost of classes at Trident varies depending on your resident status. Please check with the
Admissions Office and the business office to get the latest cost per credit hour and school fees.

What is the cost of equipment, books and lab fees?
There are no additional lab fees beyond tuition.  At the beginning of each semester the instructor of each course will go over any costs for the course (videotapes, audio recording material, etc.) and/or book requirements.

How much access is there to the equipment?
As much as you want within reason, and within the needs of other students and classes. Students are encouraged to check out equipment and to come in during school hours to practice. The equipment doesn't do any good getting dusty on the shelves.

Is there Radio and Television work available locally?
Yes, there is a fair amount of radio and television positions in the area and many RTV graduates have established radio and television careers in cities across the United States.  Before you graduate you will complete an internship program which will give you the opportunity to work and train at a local radio or television station. While we cannot guarantee employment, many students who participate in the RTV Internship Program are offered jobs after completing an Internship.

Are the class times flexible?
Yes, and as the program grows we find that we must offer classes a couple of times a year instead of only once. So as we grow, yes, the classes and times will be more flexible.

Can I transfer to another school?
Yes, you can. We have had many students transfer to some of the best broadcasting schools in the country. The training that you receive at Trident Technical College is exceptional because our program provides on-location, hands-on experience in all areas of radio and television production. Many schools will accept several of our courses upon reviewing their content. Trident Technical College and the Radio Television/Film Department will do all it can to provide any school with the information it needs to accept our students.

Will Trident Tech help me find a job?
Yes, we will do all that we can to help you secure employment. Part of the mission of our college is to help in the job placement of students. Networking and word-of-mouth are the best ways to find work, but the college is activly looking for employment for its students.

I want to do work in both film and video, is that possible?
Yes, it is. The Radio Television/Film Department has two separate programs: the Film Program and the Radio/Television Program. In the Film Program we use only film cameras and film equipment for our hands on training. The program in Radio/Television concentrates on training students to work at local television and radio stations. The Film Program offers several certificate programs (Non-Linear Editing and Film Production for example) while the Radio/Television Program offers an Associate Degree and a Radio Certificate. As a student at TTC you will be able to take classes in both areas.  In fact, the film classes count as technical electives in the Radio/Television program.

What's the difference between film and video?
That is a hard question to answer in just a few lines. Film is used extensively in Hollywood movies, many national television commercials and television dramas. Video is used for broadcast purposes such as local commercials, news, and reality televison programs. Both mediums are distinctive in their look and use. Each require special skills to be used effectively.

What kind of jobs can I get after I have my certificate?
Upon completion of the RTV program, students who wish to pursue careers in the radio and television industry can look for positions as audio technicians, board operators, videographers, video editors, video tape operator, studio camera operation, studio lighting, and studio production assistants.  The RTV Program's main goal is to train students for entry level positions in the Radio and Television industry. However, you can't just walk into a Radio or Television station and say "I have a degree from TTC, give me a job." No matter who you are;  you must prove yourself and pay your dues. Having some experience with the equipment and having completed the RTV Internship program will help you to put a foot in the door of this industry or it can help you to advance to other positions.

Can I work and still take classes?
Yes, most of our students already have a job or need to have a job. We do encourage students to look for jobs that have flexible hours.
