TTC Receives Veteran’s Upward Bound Grant
In August 2007, TTC was awarded a Veterans Upward Bound (VUB) Grant from the U.S. Department of Education. TTC will receive $1.25 million ($250,000 a year for five years) to operate a VUB program, the only such program in the state.
Veterans Upward Bound is a federally-funded TRIO program designed to help eligible U.S. military veterans refresh their academic skills so that they can successfully enroll in and complete postsecondary education. TTC’s VUB project will serve 120 participants each year and will provide intensive academic assistance in core curriculum classes. In addition, the program will provide a basic skills refresher course, a course entitled "Navigating the College Environment," a mentoring component, tutoring, career and academic/personal counseling components, referrals to other agencies that assist veterans, and tours of college campuses.
The new project is currently operating from the Main Campus with three full-time employees, including Brian Jerdan, Project Director; Chris Felty, Academic Coordinator; and Crushunda Oxford, Administrative Assistant.

TTC Wins Prestigious Fulbright Group Projects Abroad Grant

On May 25, 2008 five Trident Technical College instructors departed from Charleston bound for West Africa. Tim Brown, Karen Stewart-Cain, Ann McDonald, Lester Pittman and Donald West were among 13 educators selected to participate in the prestigious Mano River Fulbright program.
The objectives of the trip include experiencing daily life and customs of West Africa; drawing connections among Gullah, Geechee, and West African cultures; and sharing these lessons with African and Lowcountry students and adults. The group will study in Sierra Leone and Guinea for approximately five weeks. The entire Mano River Fulbright team includes employees from TTC, the Charleston County School District, the College of Charleston, the Avery Institute, the South Carolina State Museum, and Chicago State University.
Participants will attend lectures, visit local sites and cruise the Niger and Moa Rivers. The delegation will also visit primary and secondary schools. Each program participant will submit a journal and will conduct presentations to various civic groups in the Charleston area when they return home.
