Online & Mixed Mode Best Practices

  • Course provides course competencies, learning objectives, and an outline or summary of units, modules, or chapters.
  • Assignments and expectations are clearly defined and easily found within the course.
  • Course navigation is clear, easy, and well organized. Courses are designed with general usability in mind, load quickly from the Internet, have simple formatting (font, size, column width), and print easily.
  • Course contains an online orientation to the course software.
  • Course contains contact information for the instructor and technical support. Appropriate mechanisms are in place to aid students who experience difficulty using the technology. (SACS Requirement)
  • Course Information and Welcome pages are updated every semester to reflect new course dates and to make sure links to Internet resources are not broken.
  • Course is coherent and complete.
  • Course is organized in modules or reasonably sized "chunks" of materials.
  • Course provides timely and appropriate interaction between faculty and students, and among students. (SACS Requirement) Collaboration between students is not only encouraged, but also in most cases required and graded.
  • Course includes links to outside Internet resources.
  • Library resources are available to support the course. (SACS Requirement)
  • Students have prompt and regular feedback from the instructor.
  • Students are provided clearly defined prerequisites and entry-level skills for the course.
  • Required technology is reasonable so that it does not limit most students’ ability to take the course.
  • Course results in learning appropriate to the program of study, and it covers the same concepts and has the same course competencies as the on-campus equivalent.
  • Faculty assumes responsibility for and exercises oversight over the course, ensuring both the rigor of programs and the quality of instruction. (SACS Requirement)
  • Students receive appropriate supervision in the course.
  • Course utilizes the learning tools available in online course software.
  • Student achievement and learning is evaluated through tests and assignments.
  • Learners are provided opportunities for self-assessment and non-graded practice testing during the course.
  • Learners are allowed the opportunity to assess both the quality of the instruction and the effectiveness of the technology.
  • Students are provided with a readiness assessment prior to enrollment in online courses.
  • Students are given appropriate orientation to the technology requirements for participation in online course.
