Distance learning courses cover the same material with the same transfer abilities as campus-based courses; the difference is the mode of delivery. Admission, registration, and tuition for distance learning are handled in the same manner as traditional courses.
To view a list of courses, follow the Course Search link and use the drop-down menu to choose the method of delivery you wish to view.
The mode in which distance learning is delivered can take many forms:
Online (web delivered)
Course in a Bag (CIB)
Mixed Mode
Dual Credit
Instructional TV
Online
Online courses are classes that are taught via the Internet. They are designed for the busy college student who may not have time to come to campus. Trident's online courses have the same educational objectives as the courses that are taught in the face-to-face (F2F) classroom. They are degree credit classes which count for the same credits as their F2F equivalent.
Online classes encourage interaction with other students and active participation, including threaded discussion, virtual group projects, collaborative online assignments, auto-marked online quizzes, e-mail, course calendar, and course content searches. These online interactions are mostly asynchronous to allow the learner the flexibility and convenience of planning when and where they "come to class".
Quizzes and tests are available online in some courses while others require that mid-term and final exams be administered at the testing center.
There are some online classes that require occasional on-campus and site visits. Please contact the instructor for the required face-to-face activities schedule before enrolling for the course.
Course in a Bag (CIB)
Course in a Bag courses let students take college-level classes in their own homes, work site or other locations at times convenient to them. Students complete courses by viewing pre-produced lessons on videotape, audiotape, CD or DVD; reading text(s); completing assignments and communicating with instructors via telephone, campus visits, mail and/or e-mail. CIB exams are administered at the testing center.
If students cannot attend a mandatory orientation, they must contact the instructor prior to the beginning of classes to ensure they receive proper orientation to the course and access to course materials.
Mixed Mode
At Trident, mixed mode is designed to combine a once a week face-to-face (F2F) meeting with at least one asynchronous activity (e.g., web-based and/or media-based) to create an alternative to traditional lecture-style classes. The idea is to help students understand fundamental concepts before their F2F activities.
All formal testing is administered in the testing center or online. If the asynchronous activity is online, WebCT will deliver that component of the course.
Dual Credit
Dual credit courses allow high school students to take college courses for which the student can simultaneously earn both college and high school credit.
With the permission of their high schools or homeschool associations, qualified students may enroll in college courses at Trident Technical College that will be applied to the 24 units of credit required for a state high school diploma. Successful completion of these courses also allows high school students the opportunity to make substantial progress toward their college education before finishing high school.
Instructional Television (ITV)
ITV courses are college-level courses broadcast through compressed video and broadband systems to area high schools and courses broadcast between campuses via Trident’s instructional television system.
