Pell Grants
A Federal Pell grant, unlike a loan, does not have to be repaid. It is based on need and is only awarded to undergraduate students who have not earned a bachelor's or professional degree. The U.S. Department of Education determines your need using a standard formula and the information you provide on your FAFSA. This produces an estimated family contribution (EFC).
The maximum amount for a Pell grant in the 2008-2009 academic year is $4731. The amount of your award is determined by your EFC. The amount you receive is also dependent upon your enrollment status. You will receive a lesser amount if you are enrolled as a part-time student vice a full-time student (12 hours or more).
Academic Competitiveness Grant
Students who qualify for a Pell Grant may also qualify for an ACG. This grant does not have to be repaid. Unlike Pell Grants, the ACG has an academic criteria for eligiblity. Students must have completed a rigorous high school dipolma (as defined by the US Department of Education), qualify for Pell Grant and be a United States citizen to receive up to $750 as a first-time student who graduated after May, 2005. Students can renew this grant for their second year only by earning 24 or more hours in their first year and having a 3.0 cumulative GPA.
Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants
FSEOG is for undergraduates with exceptional financial need. The FSEOG does not have to be paid back. As opposed to the Pell grant, TTC receives a set amount for the FSEOG, therefore, there is no guarantee that all needy students will receive the award.
Federal Work-Study
The Federal Work-Study (FWS) program uses federal funds to provide part-time employment for students with financial need. Students who are enrolled at least half-time (6 credit hours), may work up to 20 hours per week. FWS employment is determined by the student’s total FWS award, the student’s class schedule, and the student‘s academic progress.
*You may be required to return a portion of your grant or loan funds if you withdraw from your courses or discontinue attending and receive failing grades. See the return of funds page.
