Dynamic Tutoring Program

What is Dynamic Tutoring?
Dynamic Tutoring refers to our tutoring program which teams students with other students, in an attempt to provide more expedient and effective tutoring services for our participants who need that extra little boost in a troublesome academic area.Upward Bound Math and Science Dynamic Tutoring

How is Dynamic Tutoring better than the Hotline used in the past?
A number of studies have indicated that students respond more enthusiastically to their peers in tutoring situations, and UBMSC would like to experiment with the student-on-student model. Furthermore, with adult tutors at their stations for only six hours per week, we lost much flexibility in our tutoring program. Besides, course content is "fresher" in a peer's mind than it is for someone who has been out of school for some time. With Dynamic Tutoring, our partcipants can network with each other to find convenient tutoring time. They can get together during or after school, visit each other's homes (with parental permission, of course), or help each other out on the phone. If computer access is available at home, students can even utilize e-mail or Instant Messaging.

Okay, sounds interesting. But how does it work?
When a student's academic average indicates that he or she requires tutoring services, a notice will be mailed to that student, indicating the requirement for those services as well as the student tutor who has been assigned to him or her. At the same time, the tutor will receive a notice indicating the assignment of a tutee. If the match isn't a good one, either the tutor or tutee may contact the Director and ask for an alternate arrangement. The tutor will need to maintain a tutoring log (provided by the Director). The tutor will sign verifying the  date and the length of time spent tutoring; the tutee will also sign verifying that he or she did, indeed, receive tutoring services. Each session should last a minimum of 30 minutes. Envelopes will be provided to return the logs to the Director after each four-week period.

What happens when there's no student tutor who's had the appropriate courses to help another student?
Then, the Director will contact the target school to see if arrangements can be made with a teacher or a school-based tutoring program.

Well, I might be interested in being a tutor, but there should be something in it for me, too, don't you think?
Absolutely! In fact, not only will you both have the satisfaction of being the source of a success story, you'll also receive gift cards to your favorite stores. As long as tutoring occurs once a week, both the tutor and tutee will receive a gift card when tutoring is terminated, either because of standards achieved, or the end of a semester. If the tutee raises his or her average to at least 78, the amount of the gift card will be higher. The minimum amount of the gift card will be $10.00 for each student, regardless of the results of tutoring. If the tutee passes at the next reporting period, the gift card will be $20.00. If the tutee attains at least a 78 average (the minimum target goal in a tutoring scenario), then both participants will receive a $25.00 gift card. But remember, the gift cards are not issued until the tutoring terminates, either because the student pulled the average up to 78, or because the term ended, whichever comes first. And, tutoring contacts must be made at least once a week, and last a minimum of 30 minutes each. (If circumstances warrant missing a week, students may schedule two sessions on a subsequent week.)

When do we get started?
When a student has been identified as in need of tutoring, both that student and his or her tutor will receive a notification.
