TTC Celebrates Black History Month

January 15, 2010... Trident Technical College begins its Black History Month celebration Wednesday, Feb. 3 with a full day of activities at the college’s Main Campus in North Charleston. All events are free and open to the public. Students will speak on this year’s theme, “The History of Black Economic Empowerment,” at 10 a.m. in the College Center (Bldg. 920), followed by the TTC Gospel Choir at 10:35 a.m. Mattie Sanders will display and discuss her African-American Inventors exhibit from 11:05 to 11:55 a.m.

In the Student Center (Bldg. 410), students and the community can enjoy soul food in the TTC Café. “A View from the Sea Islands,” photographs from the Avery Institute, will be on display 2-4 p.m. Closing out the day, the college will present two documentaries, “Two Dollars and a Dream: Madame C.J. Walker” and “I am Somebody: The Charleston Hospital Workers Strike,” 3-7 p.m. in the College Center (Bldg. 920). TTC is the host of the Martin Luther King Jr. Symposium, which will be held 6:30-7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 5 in the College Center. It is sponsored by the Black History Intercollegiate Consortium, which consists of TTC, the Medical University of South Carolina, Charleston Southern University, The Citadel and College of Charleston. The symposium is a student-driven program honoring the life of King and recognizing community leaders who work to continue his legacy of social justice.

The college’s Berkeley Campus in Moncks Corner will hold a hair and fashion design show 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 24 in the Learning Resources Center. Palmer Campus, in downtown Charleston, will display Harlem Renaissance photographs by Carl Van Vechten Feb. 1-26 in Room 125. This display is sponsored by the McClellanville Arts Council. Palmer Campus will also show the documentary “I am Somebody: The Charleston Hospital Workers Strike” Monday, Feb. 15 in the Amphitheater (Room 182) at 10:20 a.m. Eastside Day, a celebration of community, will be held 10:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 19 in the Amphitheater.

TTC completes its Black History Month celebration with Global Awareness Week, Feb. 15-19, at Main Campus, and Feb. 22-26, at Palmer Campus. For more information on these events, call 843-574-6012.
