More than 90 students from 12 area high schools and home-school organizations participated in this year’s Model United Nations for high school students held at Trident Technical College.
The Model United Nations offers students the chance to become familiar with diplomacy, international relations and how the UN works. It also allows them to exercise and improve their public speaking skills. Teams of students represented different countries on three committees: Legal, Political and Security, and Social and Humanitarian. Each committee strives to reach a resolution through formal debate, resolution writing and caucus.
Awards for the Legal Committee include: Distinguished Effort (equivalent of 1st place) – Matt Londergan of Pinewood Preparatory School, representing Congo; Outstanding Achievement (equivalent of 2nd place) – Austin McCullough of Wando High School, representing India; and Honorable Mention (equivalent of 3rd place) – Aris Hanchard of Pinewood Preparatory School, representing Brazil.
Awards for the Political and Security Committee include: Distinguished Effort (equivalent of 1st place) – Kyle Smith of Pinewood Preparatory School, representing United States; Outstanding Achievement (equivalent of 2nd place) – Aubrey McCullough of Wando High School, representing India; and Honorable Mention (equivalent of 3rd place) – Katie Iannace of Pinewood Preparatory School, representing Brazil.
Awards for the Social and Humanitarian Committee include: Distinguished Effort (equivalent of 1st place) – Beth Regalbuto of TEACH Home School, representing North Korea; Outstanding Achievement (equivalent of 2nd place) – Laura Kate Gamble of Pinewood Preparatory School, representing Congo; and Honorable Mention (equivalent of 3rd place) – Sealy Crider of Goose Creek High School, representing South Korea.
This is Trident Technical College’s fifth year to sponsor the event. Members of TTC’s Model UN team, which competes in the national Model United Nations sponsored by Harvard University, served as moderators.
